“Annie,” became a Broadway Musical based on the popular 1924 Harold Gray a comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” during 1977, and was adapted to the movie screen during 1982 by John Huston, featuring the original music as composed by Charles Strouse and lyrics penned by Martin Charnin. Aileen Quinn was cast as Annie, who plays an orphan growing up in New York during the Great Depression.
According to Variety, Will Smith and Jay-Z are producing the flick through Smith’s successful company Overbrook Productions, which has produced films such as Hancock, ATL, Takers, I Am Legend, and The Karate Kid. Will Smith hopes to imitate the success of his remake of The Karate Kid with the upcoming remake of Annie, which starred his son, Jaden Smith, and has earned over $350 million worldwide.
Willow Smith is signed to Jay-Z-’s Roc Nation label, which is a partnership between Jay and Live Nation, the largest live entertainment company in the world. As a young artist, Willow has already released a smash-hit single with the track “Whip My Hair,” which reached #11 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
Jay-Z has already previously benefited from Annie, as his 1998 “Hard Knock Life,” sampled a music clip from the 1977 Broadway Musical, “Annie.”
