A photo of President Obama embracing First Lady Michelle Obama became the most retweeted photo in the history of Twitter, Tuesday (Nov. 6).
After winning re-election, the image was posted on the president's Twitter page with the caption "Four more years."
As of this morning, the photo passed 675,000 retweets, and was favorited by users 230, 375 times. On Facebook the photo received a more than two million "likes."
Social media played a big role in breaking, and responding to, news about the presidential election. Throughout Election Day over 31 million political tweets were posted on the site, making it the most tweeted about subject in the history of U.S. politics.
"Twitter brought people closer to almost every aspect of the election this years," said Twitter spokeswoman Rachel Horwitz. "From breaking news, to sharing the experience of watching the debates, to interacting directly with the candidates, Twitter became a kind of nationwide caucus."
After news of Obama's victory, which was clenched once he surpassed the needed 270 electoral votes to win the election, Twitter received a record-breaking 327,452 Tweets Per Minute.
The previous Twitter photo record was held by Justin Bieber whom the president knocked into second-place. As for Twitter topics, the last event to receive more than 100,000 TPMs was this year's Summer Olympics, held in London.
