Mixtape Review: Kid Ink "Rocketship Shawty"

The heavily tattooed, loud smoking Kid Ink drops off a mixtape full of fresh new music. “Rocketship Shawty” is Ink’s first official mixtape since releasing his debut independent album “Up & Away”. Since hitting the radar last year, Kid Ink has been compared to fellow artist Tyga & Wiz due to his tattoos and love for the sticky, but he has finally found his lane and has been gaining a buzz ever since.

This is how you start off a mixtape! Kid Ink tells you what’s good with the Young Chop produced track “OG”. The beat comes in hard knocking speakers off the wall and Kid spits about being an OG while smoking some good old OG.

While watching her “Badass” drop down that pole, Kid tells us why he feels like the man of the hour. Kid Ink fans will recognize that this track leaked before the official release of this mixtape.

Evening though i’m only 3 tracks deep into “Rocketship Shawty” “Bossin’ Up” will probably be my favorite track. This track gives me the same vibe that “No Sticks, No Seeds” did when I first heard it. The chopped and Screwed hook fits to the beat perfectly.

The pac man style beat for “Fresh” just doesn't do it for me. It seems like it was meant to be a club banger, but just couldn't quite get right. Kid Ink is one of the very few independent artist able to cross over into the Pop music and with “Weekend” he does just that. This will not have your speakers knocking, but i'm sure it is a good radio friendly track.

What They Doin” brings the mixtape back to the right vibe. The YG assisted track warns lame niggas to stay in their lane, before Kid Ink turns back to his old ways. o.O Kid Ink you gangsta now?

Holey Moley” gives Kid Ink another chance to brag about how much money he has and how he can smash your bitch. Nothing too special here, the hook is basic and the content of his lyrics are overused, but the beat does catch your ear

As the piano keys bring us into “Can’t Ignore Me” Ink spits about his hustle, grind, and while paying homage to the artist before him he declares the game can no longer ignore him. The piano is a good fit to the theme of the track.

On the next track, Kid Ink is about to start a “Fire Storm”. Kid Ink is widely known for his love of that kush and this track lets us know why. The beat is a banger also.

Can’t nobody see him when he goes “Ghost”. The laid back but heavy base track gives Kid Ink another chance to explain why he thinks he is better than these lame niggas. He drops a line asking why is it his job to inspire you to get up and do something. And now we are back to the kush talk, all he wants to do is “Get You High” for the moment. This track is something for the ladies.
Poppin Shit” was the lead single for this mixtape and features Bad Boy artist Los. Expect to hear this track in a club, a banger that gives them the chance to brag about bottle poppin and rack spending.

With another club banger, “Last Time” is a track i can hear playing in the club. “Loaded” is another one of the leak tracks from this mixtape and is also one of the hottest. “Keep Up” sounds like Rosco Dash would be featured and is perfect for the ladies.

Rounding out the mixtape is the remix to “Hell & Back” featuring Machine Gun Kelly. Kels brings his rapid fire flow while Kid Ink goes through the struggles he has had in his life.

Kid Ink is one of the few artist to be able to stay independent and still have a major buzz. Independent artist make their money from doing shows, and you're only as popular as your last hit. So it makes sense for him to put out an mixtape so soon after releasing his album. I’m giving this mixtape a 3.5 out of 5. A few tracks a not my style, but most do the tape justice. While Inks lyrics are not too deep he is able to come up with some great club bangers.
