Mixtape Review: Fabolous "Soul Tape 2"

Fabolous made Thanksgiving worth wild with the release of his mixtape "Soul Tape 2". I have been patiently waiting for this tape to drop ever sense he revealed the news last month. Fabolous released the first "Soul Tape" last year and i'm eager to see if he can repeat the magic he made with Soul Tape.

With a intro from Christopher Wallace "Transformation" starts the mixtape off right. The beat sets the tone of the mixtape and Fab spits a story of his transformation from his stick up days to who he is now.

While The Streetrunners produced track "For The Love" was released way before this tape dropped it fits in perfectly with the vibe of Soul Tape 2. Fab's first verse is great advice for any up and coming artist. Would you do it for the love?

The late great Mr. Wallace intros another track while Fabolous is screaming "B.I.T.E.". Bitch I'm Tryin to Eat is a tracked focused on his hustle and dreams of getting his money up. Fab has always been one of those artist to start new slang and I can hear people now running B.I.T.E into the ground! R.I.P. #SWAG and #YOLO.

We Get High” features a sample from Michael Franks 1975 song “St. Elmo's Fire", which refers to the the weather phenomenal involving blue fire. Loso uses the weather reference to describe how high he gets.

Pressure makes “Diamonds” and all Loso wants to do is shine bright like one. Fab uses the diamonds track to compare certain situations in his life where he came out on top. He even touches on how some other artist jock his style and have even tried to take his spot, even though he is still here. the track ends with a screwed and chopped version of Rihanna’s  new Diamonds track.

Guess Whos Bizzack” is a sample from the 1982 Bob James's song "Shamboozie”, but will be more recognized from the 2002 song “Guess Whos Back” which features Hip Hop legends Scarface and Jay-Z. Guess whos bizzack just reminds haters and fans that Fabolous is back to claim his spot in the Hip Hop community.

Man these bitches be acting up! J. Cole joins Loso on “Louis Vuitton”, where they reminisce about some of the ladies in their past. The problems seems to be that these chicks are just too materialistic for Jermaine and John. Both Cole and Loso spit two verses each and switch back and forth on the hook.

G.O.O.D. Music’s Pusha T drops his feature on the heavy base “The Life Is So Exciting” track. Loso confirms what all of us think when thinking of a rappers life; Money, Cars, Jewelry, Vacations, and Girls.

Continuing the theme of life, Fabolous tells us the street life is the “Only Life I Know”. the life of a street niggas has its problems and Loso’s problem seems to be between being there for his lady or huggin the block.

One of the more laid back tracks on this tape is a remix to Rozay’s “Diced Pineapples”. Diddy’s girl Cassie and Trey Songz lend vocals to this track as Fabolous goes on about his girl. The vibe of this reminds me of “In The Morning” on the last Soul Tape.

Keeping the features rolling MMG’s Wale jumps in the booth for “Beauty”. Riding on the vibe of Diced Pineapples Wale and Fabolous trade turns telling us what they think is beautiful in a women. another nice slow song for the ladies.

Rounding out this 12 track Loso is joined by Slaughterhouse member Joe Budden and G.O.O.D. Music’s R&B singer Teyana Taylor to talk about past dysfunctional relationships.  “Want You Back” is a sample from Dionne Warwicks hit song “You Gonna Need Me”.

I must admit i’m a little disappointed, while Soul Tape 2 is a solid mixtape. I was hoping for just a little but more. First off, its only 12 tracks! Secondly, while the tracks were very soulful I don’t think Loso brought it like he did with the previous Soul Tape. The tape just seems a little rushed. But as I said, the tape is better than all of the other releases as of lately and i’m giving it a 4 out of 5.
