2 Chainz’s former duo group, Playaz Circle, never quite achieved the success that 2 Chainz has as a solo artist. However, their name and logo is giving Disturbing Tha Peace and Def Jam a whole lot of grief, seeing the imprints slammed with a lawsuit. Reports are that the lawsuit has been filed due to the illegal use of the name and logo.
Music consultant, Torrey Cook, is launching the suit, claiming that he owns the logo and name, Playaz Circle. He alleges that Def Jam and Disturbing Tha Peace have released three compilation albums which feature the Atlanta pair, and that the imprints have failed to compensate Cook for the proceeds from these albums.
In the suit, Cook also stresses that 2 Chainz and Dolla Boy were completely aware of his status as the legal owner of the name and logo. He states that he attempted to work out a deal with both Def Jam and Disturbing Tha Peace, but that negotiations were broken off, leaving him with no response from the labels at a critical stage in the process.
“Mr. Cook made it very clear to all involved, at every juncture, that the name Playaz Circle was trademarked and that it belonged exclusively to him,” the suit states. “Further Mr. Epps [Ed. note: 2 Chainz] and Mr. Conyers [Ed. note: Dolla Boy] confirmed that they understood that the [trade]mark belonged to Mr. Cook.”
