Two officers shot nearly a dozen people in pursuit of gunman, Jeffrey Johnson, who showed up at the building dressed in business attire and carrying a briefcase. Although Johnson pointed his gun at authorities he never fired. The officers shot him, and hit others in the process.
As it stands, Johnson's only intended victim was his former boss.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg released a statement eluding to the fact that the NYPD struck innocent victims. “Some may have been accidentally shot by the police,” he said.
Assuming that the NYPD's goal was to protect the public, the casualties will probably not be seen as a disregard of proper protocol. However, the department has been under fire for using excessive force. Two weeks ago police shot a knife-wielding man 12 times, which his family feels was unnecessary. “It doesn't take 12 bullets to kill one person,” said the man's aunt, Margaret Johnson.
The NYPD stood behind their decision to kill the man, as he was said to be a threat to both their safety, and that of surrounding bystanders.
