Hurricane Irene and her destruction

Sunday, August 28, 20110 comments

Hurricane (now Tropical Storm) Irene made its way up the east coast late last week into today. As it currently stands 4 million households are without power. 10,000 commercial airline flights were also cancelled as a safety precaution. This is due to the strong winds, flooding, and rains brought on by the storm.

According to the LA Times, the current fatality rate stands at 8, including an 11 year old boy who was struck by a tree limb and a man who met the same unfortunate fate. As the Hurricane came many of the residents of the areas affected braced for the worst because not only was it soon for hurricane season but many of the areas aren’t exactly hurricane hotspots. Evacuations were seen in Staten Island and Battery Park in New York City, the Jersey Shore, all coastal areas of Delaware, plus parts of Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina.

This Hurricane comes on the heels of a 5.8 magnitude Earthquake that was felt in many of these states last Tuesday. As the numbers and more information come in we will continue to update you. Stay with us for the latest. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with those affected.
