In the lawsuit, which was made public on Monday (Feb. 14), LaChapelle accuses Rihanna of ripping images from his popular photographs, which have appeared in publications such as Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. LaChapelle claims that "the music video is directly derived from and substantially similar to the LaChapelle works," and has copied the "composition, total concept, feel, tone, mood, theme, colors, props, settings, decors, wardrobe and lighting" of his popular work.
LaChapelle cites eight specific instances in the video where he claims that his work can be seen, including one particular shot of Rihanna set against a blue background, showing a piece of candy in her mouth. Rihanna's camp has not issued a statement in response to the lawsuit as of yet. The pop star and photographer have also worked together in the past. LaChapelle's images of Rihanna can be seen on his website
