Ja Rule was slated to be sentenced in a New York courtroom yesterday (February 9) morning, however the sentencing hearing has been delayed to March. According to prosecutors, the reason for the setback is in connection with changes that need to be made in a pre-sentencing report for the Grammy-nominated rapper.
Rule is expected to be sentenced to two years in prison in connection with a plea deal he reached with prosecutors in December of last year. As a part of the deal, he pled guilty to a lesser charge of attempted weapon possession in the second degree. If convicted at trial, he was facing up to 15 years in jail.
The New York rapper will reportedly release an album before heading behind bars. The LP, which was initially titled Venni Vetti Vecci 2010, will now be titled The Renaissance Project, a name inspired from a trip he took to Africa.
“They built this statue [in Africa], it’s called The Renaissance, and it’s a statue of a man holding his baby on his shoulders with his wife in his arms, pointing to the heavens,” recalled Rule during an interview with MTV. “To me, it just symbolized what I’m about right now and just the word -- fresh start, I said that’s what I want to call my project, The Renaissance Project and it represents what I’m about.” (YoRaps)
